José Antonio Viera-Gallo Q.

José Antonio Viera Gallo has focused his professional career mainly in the public sector, fulfilling different tasks in various governments and state institutions. Despite his well-known and permanent work in the public sector, José Antonio has also ventured into the private world, previously serving as Of Counsel for Public Law in the Colombara Olmedo study (2006). In addition, and during 2006, he was a member of the Board of Directors of AFP Provida.

Ambassador of Chile in Argentina, from June 2015 to March 2018.

He served as President of Chile Transparente, national chapter of Transparency International, during 2014 to 2015.

From 2011 to 2015 he was president of the Chilean-Israeli Institute of Culture.

Minister of the Constitutional Court, between 2010 and 2013.

Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the government of Michelle Bachelet, between 2007 and 2010.

Senator for the Bío Bío Region, circumscription Nº 12 eighth region north, Concepción, during the years 1998 to 2005, integrating the committees of Constitution Legislation and Justice, Health, Environment and Human Rights.

Deputy for the 44th district (Concepción, Chiguayante and San Pedro de la Paz) during the legislative periods 1990-1994 and 1994-1998, being President of the Chamber from March 11, 1990 to July 21, 1993.

Founding President of the ProyectAmérica Corporation (2006), which deals with reflection and political training in the field of progressivism.

First President of the Chamber of Deputies with the return to democracy (1990-1993).

He chaired the Latin American Commission on Human Rights.

During the years 1973 and 1984 he lived in Italy, at which time he founded the magazine Chile-America with Bernardo Leighton, Julio Silva Solar and Esteban Tomic. The publication had an informative and political reflection on the reality of Chile and Latin America, being 9 years in circulation. At the same time he obtained a research grant from the Ford Foundation, for the Institute of Contemporary Society Studies (ISSOCO) directed by Lelio Basso. Alongside this, he worked at Editorial Valecchi, translating books from Spanish to Italian (1976-1977) and as a researcher at the IDOC International center in Rome, becoming its Deputy Director (1977-1984). Back in Chile, he founded and directed the Center for Social Studies and the Chile-América Editorial together with Julio Silva Solar.

Deputy Secretary of Justice of the government of Salvador Allende (1970-1972).

In parallel to his occupations in the public world, José Antonio has been a consultant in various national and international organizations, such as UNESCO, FAO, UN NGLS Geneva and the World Council of Churches. He also joined the Board of the NGO HURIDOCS, which dealt with human rights information and documentation systems. He has also been twice president of Electoral Observation Missions or Special Missions of the OAS in Ecuador and in Colombia.
